Mediterranean C

Welcome to Fieldlab. With interests in biology, gastronomy, graphics, images and music, Fieldlab was founded in South London in the 1990s by me, Professor Mark C. Field. My origins are in Hackney and I have the honour of being a true Cockney. I was educated at The Judd School in Tonbridge, Kent and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and awarded first-class honours in Biochemistry, remaining at Oxford for doctoral studies. My postdoctoral career was intially at the Rockefeller University in New York and then at Genentech and Stanford University in California. I established a research group at Imperial College London in the1990s, moved to the University of Cambridge in 2005 and University of Dundee in 2013, retiring as Professor Emeritus in late 2025, following the University of Dundee's financial difficulties. I have authored over 500 research articles and abstracts, enjoyed an unbroken thirty five year publication record and continue to collaborate with many scientists in the UK, EU, North and South America, Africa and Asia.

I review for many journals and granting agencies and am Editor in Chief of Nucleus and Chief Speciality Editor for Molecular and Cellular topics in Frontiers in Parasitology. I have served on the Medical Research Council Infection and Immunity Board, Wellcome Trust Expert Reading Group, as an external advisor at Charles University, the council of the British Society for Parasitology and board member for CamPOD, a charity in Cambridge. I currently serve on the National Science Centre (Poland) grants council. On stepping away from directing a laboratory in 2025 my emphasis shifted to the arts and generation of electronic- and guitar-based ambient/post-rock music, photography, supporting folks in their careers and feeble political activism (mainly shouting at the radio). I currently live in central Cambridge with my partner, three tabbies and a music/photography studio.
